The “road trip” is quintessentially American; a remnant of our heritage of manifest destiny and the open range. Central to these values is the notion that the freedom to travel, the freedom to congregate or the freedom to be alone with your thoughts, or demons, is inalienable.
Does our commitment to a renewable and sustainable and secure energy future require from us a repudiation of these values? As we rolled towards the Pacific it became evident that this question should be, and will be, answered in the negative.
